What does "Kol BeRamah" mean?

"Kol beramah" is Hebrew meaning "a voice in a high place." When the Jewish people were exiled from the Land of Israel after the destruction of the first Temple, they passed Rachel's tomb on their way to Babylonia. The book of Jeremiah recounts that as they passed, Rachel cried to God to save them.

"So says the Lord, a voice is heard on high [kol beramah nishmah], bitter weeping, Rachel weeps for her children. She refuses to be comforted for her children, for they are no more. So says the Lord, restrain your voice from crying and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your labors, the word of the Lord, they will return from the land of the enemy. There is hope for your future, the word of the Lord, your children will return to their borders." (Jeremiah 31:14-16)

"Kol Beramah" is the voice of Rachel heard on high crying for her children in exile, crying for us. But it can also be our voices joined together here in the high desert of Santa Fe, crying out to God to ask Him to bring us back to Him.
